Abstract:
Diagnosis of cognitive impairment (CI) is an integral part of the work of primary care physicians working with older adults. CI is an extremely heterogeneous group of conditions not only in severity but also in etiology. Severity is classified as dementia (severe CI) and non-dementia disorders, which often represent the prodromal stage of dementia. Etiologically, the most common causes of CI in the elderly are neurodegenerative (Alzheimer's disease, diffuse Lewy body disease) and cerebrovascular diseases, as well as a combination of both.
