World Week of the Glaucoma from 09 to 15 March: What is important to know?

From March 9 to March 15, the World Wide Week Week is held around the world, aimed at increasing the awareness of the disease, which remains one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness. Glaucoma is a chronic progressive disease of the optic nerve, requiring a comprehensive approach to treatment. An important role in the management of patients is played by the cooperation of ophthalmologists and neurologists, since neuroprotement is a key element of therapy that contributes to the preservation of vision. The lesion of the optic nerve refers to neurodegenerative processes. The joint work of an ophthalmologist and a neurologist allows:

- diagnose neurodegenerative changes in the early stages.

- prescribe complex therapy, including antioxidants and drugs that improve cerebral circulation.

- prevent the development of complications.

In the pathogenesis of glaucomas, ischemic, metabolic and oxidative processes, leading to the death of ganglion cells of the retina and atrophy of the optic nerve are of main importance. In this regard, modern clinical recommendations of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation emphasize the need for neuroprotective therapy as a mandatory component of treatment of patients with glaucoma. One of the drugs with a proven neuroprotective effect is Mexidol (ethylmethylhydroxypyridine succinate)

The World Weekom Week Week is a reminder of the need for early diagnosis and timely treatment of the disease. The inclusion of neuroprotective therapy using Mexidol in the treatment regimen for patients with glaucoma is a proven path to slowing down the progression of the disease and preserving visual functions. The close interaction of ophthalmologists and neurologists will help improve the quality of life of patients and reduce the risk of irreversible vision loss.
