High blood glucose levels in hypoxic-ischemic conditions are one of the main factors determining the extent of brain damage. Hyperglycemic-ischemic conditions result in increased production of reactive oxygen species and impaired functioning of the endogenous antioxidant system. Medication is necessary to compensate for the developing cerebrovascular disorders associated with the combination of ischemia and diabetes. The most effective agents are antioxidants from the
2-ethyl-6-methyl-3-oxypyridine derivative group.
Keywords: cerebral ischemia, phospholipids, phosphatidylcholine, diabetes mellitus, neuropathy, free radicals.
