Abstract:
The aim of the study. To study the effect of mexidol (ethylmethylhydroxypyridine succinate) on the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF-1α) in the frontal cortex of the cerebral hemispheres during cerebral ischemia. Material and methods. The study was performed on 64 sexually mature male Wistar rats. HIF-1α expression was determined immunohistochemically. Results and discussion. It was found that a single intraperitoneal administration of mexidol at a dose of 120 mg / kg body weight and its course oral administration at a dose of 100 mg / kg body weight 3 times a day for 14 days did not affect the expression of the HIF-1α factor. Unilateral occlusion of the common carotid artery increases the expression of HIF-1α 4 hours after occlusion. Oral administration of Mexidol at a dose of 100 mg/kg body weight three times daily for 14 days before and after simulated ischemia increased HIF-1α expression at 4 and 12 hours compared to normal values on day 5, compared to occlusion control values. Thus, it was established that Mexidol increases HIF-1α expression in the frontal cortex of rats not under normal conditions, but rather during unilateral common carotid artery occlusion.
