Abstract:
The aim of the study was to evaluate Mexidol penetration across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) into different parts of the brain and cell mitochondria. Material and methods. Mexidol, manufactured by Pharmasoft Research and Production Company (Russia), was used. We studied penetration into the tissue of the cerebral cortex, cerebellum, thalamus, and medulla oblongata, as well as distribution between the mitochondrial and cytoplasmic fractions of nerve cells. Mexidol concentrations in animal plasma and brain tissue were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography. Results and conclusion. Mexidol was found to penetrate the BBB into different parts of the rat brain. Its highest concentration was determined in the tissue of the cerebral cortex. Inside nerve cells, Mexidol was detected in both the cytoplasmic and mitochondrial fractions. Key words: mexidol, pharmacokinetics, blood-brain barrier, cerebral cortex, cerebellum, thalamus, medulla oblongata, mitochondria, high-performance liquid chromatography.
